Old Business

Tonight’s speaker is Chief Harry Rilling from the Norwalk police
department to talk about critical incident response and what the Connecticut
Police chiefs are doing if a situation like this occurs.
·
March 6th - Paul O’Connell from IONA college to speak
about what colleges are doing to promote security
·
In April Meeting will sponsored by Wayne Wasilko and Boehringer
Ingelheim in Danbury
·
For May we are looking into Law Enforcement night sponsored by
Perdue Pharmaceutical in Stamford
·
June 21, 2007 the annual Golf outing at Grassy Hill in Orange is
on our website for more details.
New Business
·
The Boston Chapter will be having a seminar in Foxboro MA on
April 25,2007 with a theme of New paragons for aggressive security – Deal or No
Deal details are on our website
·
The board has decided that there will not be a September meeting
with many people still on vacation so we will be looking for speakers for
October November and December.
·
Marty gave the treasurers report as follows below for January.
The complete year to date is posted on the web site. The year end audit was
completed and we were asked to have a sign in with the cash amount given to keep
everyone honest.
·
Marty has taken over the web site design and has added a
discussion form to make any suggestions or topics you want to talk about. Marty
has engaged a company to enhance the web site and bring it out of the 80’s and
into the 20 century. He is also setting up the ability to pay by credit card on
the web for the monthly meetings.
·
Looking into the possibility of paying for the meetings in advance
for the year and receiving a discount by submitting one expense report. More
information to follow in the future.
·
We are trying to come up with many different ideas to improve
attendance we are talking to other chapters and they are having the same
attendance issues that we are. We look at what is working and what is not
working how you can track who attending. It seems that lunches do not seem to
work for us which are why we are sticking to the dinner route. Anything you can
suggest to help us improve please let us know. Talk us up bring a friend to a
meeting.

In this months Dynamics Richard Widup the director of Security for
Purdue Pharmaceutical had an excellent article please read it if you get a
minute or two. One of the questions he was asked is one of most important daily
tasks are that he has for security and he says security adds value to the
business line, which is true business would be loosing money with out security.
·
Joe Morales talked about three employment opportunities; many moor
on the web site.

2. Travelers
Insurance in Hartford is looking for a security manager no posted salary
3. HBO out of
New York is looking for a security manager

- Chuck Kriewald –Legislation
there is a senate bill presented about the platform on long island sound for
natural gas. Bill 413 an act concerning private security services. The
statement of purpose to require that any private security service obtain the
approval of the Governor and the legislature prior to operation on the waters
of Connecticut. There has been a survey done already completed by Rudolf
Juliani . more to follow.

National has changed the requirement for the number of meetings to be held.
We’re trying to change formats of the meetings to make them more
attractive to increase attendance, esp. by increasing networking
opportunities. We will have a
lunch meeting in March and possibly a meeting at a Bridgeport Bluefish game.

SPEAKER: Mike Barker, City of
New Haven. Managed Security for
the Red Cross in Mississippi and Alabama in following hurricane Katrina..
Managing security details, Mike said, was like herding cats.
It was the most remarkable effort put forth with not enough manpower,
or resources or facilities. He also said that disaster drills like TopOff3, which he
actively participated in cannot begin to compare to or ready you for an
event of this proportion. He
told the chapter of difficulties in finding manpower, in lodging,
communications, logistics and just about anything else.
He also cited numerous examples of how creatively problems were
solved by using common sense and what was at hand.
He showed pictures, too, of the terrible destruction the storm caused.

Legislative: (Charles Kriewald) State of Connecticut looking to
amend Connecticut General Statute 53a-167c, to make it a "C" felony to assault a
security or loss prevention officer.
More to follow on this subject.

Public Relations/Membership: No report.
Golf Tournament: June 10th at Grassy Hill, Orange,
CT. Meetings to be held starting February 2004.
Program: No report.
Scholarship: (John Gillian, co-chair). Thus far no applications.
Deadline extended to 1/15/04. We would like to award the scholarship(s) at our February
meeting, if possible.
Harbinger: Announcement to show appreciation for members.
"Attend February meeting & you will be able to attend March meeting at no
cost".

year 2004 to be made.
Homeland Security: Mike Moon will handle the private sector of
homeland security committee. We need someone to handle the public sector & work with
Mike.
Law Enforcement Liaison: (Dale Seymour) All police departments
in Connecticut were asked to select one officer in their department to serve as liaison
with the State of Connecticut division of Homeland Security. Many departments are
doing it but others have not done so at this time.
Old Business: Terence McGrath volunteered to start membership
recruiting via phone calls & is looking for assistance. Please contact him if you are
interested.
Mike Moon will be recognized next month for his dedication to the
chapter.
New Business: Membership appreciation night discussed.
Mike Moon elected as assistant regional V.P. He will also be our guest
speaker at our February meeting.
We have speakers for February & March.
Terence McGrath announced we are looking for chairpersons for following
committees:
Public relations, membership & foundation liaison.
Break for Dinner: 6:40PM.
Guest Speaker: Sean Leavy from Secure Systems, Inc. gave excellent
presentation on personal alarms. Their use, monitoring, & effectiveness.
Raffle: Winners John Perrotta & Brian LeFleur. Two prizes
donated by Bill Anderson.

The Homeland Security Newsletter, ANSER Institute for Homeland Security and Homeland

within ASIS, PSP certification and the PCI certification.
New Business: 2004 nomination board is being gathered.

Identification Systems, Inc.) gave an excellent overview of the latest ID Badge
Informational Systems.

Technologies Corporation provided the chapter with an excellent power point presentation
on new electronics in the security field. Electronics that bring real time video and audio
from the private sector to the public sector.

York Yankees, donated by Terence McGrath of Securitas Security Services USA, Inc.

Guest Speaker: Jim Glasser, United States Attorney was the
evenings guest speaker. Mr. Glasser provided the chapter an excellent discussion on
recent Federal cases within Connecticut.
Raffle: A 50/50 raffle was conducted and Nick DiNapoli from
Pinkerton Security and GE Capital was the winner
Next Meeting: TUESDAY May 6, 2003 AT 5 PM., is being sponsor by
Steve Biley of GE Capital and the meeting will take place at GE Capital 1600 Summer
Street, Stamford.

departments. The helicopter is an additional resource for both the public and private
sectors.
Raffle: A $50 gift certificate for the Citrus Restaurant in
Milford was the prize winner unknown.

New Business: We will be looking for someone to take over the
Treasury as we are reorangizing some of the committees. ASIS Regional meeting will be in
Boston on 2-11-03, some board members are planning to attend. Steve Biley from GE Capital
will be hosting the May meeting. The chapter has available on a monthly loan basis a new 2
volume guides on workplace violence prevention. Gary Pintek will oversee the borrowing of
materials. Steve Six announced that the Hartford chapter is trying to get Sen. Joe
Lieberman to speak at its dinner meeting in late March, he would keep us posted.

spoke about chemicals and exposures on various environments and how security professionals
can take steps to prevent chemical attacks.

from national would update chapter next month. In March 2003, Eastern Connecticut
University will be sponsoring a Conference for Homeland Security. " Securing Our
Homeland", will be held in March at the Mystic Marriott Hotel in Groton.
New Business: Chuck Kreiwald swore in The 2003 Executive Board.
There were no changes to the Board from 2002.

Guest Speaker: Martin J. McBride Special Agent with the Federal
Bureau of Investigations and Paul Zasada Communications Director with InfraGard. Both
speakers spoke and provided the chapter a presentation on InfraGard. InfraGard is a
national organization authorized under Presidential Directive 63 through NIPC (National
Infrastructure Protection Center) with oversight by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The membership represents critical infrastructure providers, associated companies and
government agencies; with the goal of acting as a conduit for information sharing between
members and government agencies. The Connecticut chapter has over 200 members and is the 7th
largest in the country.
Raffle: Steve Six, from Command Security Corporation donated two
bottles of wine. The winners were Paul Black from Stamford Health Systems and Robert
Lovell from New Milford PD.
Next Meeting: TUESDAY January 7, 2003 AT 5 PM., AT THE SONS OF

Harbinger in November 17, 2001. A discussion was held on advertisers being placed on the
web site and the possibility of the Harbinger being placed on the web site. Further
discussion was tabled for future considerations. Lynda agreed to Chair the Harbinger for
the coming year.

Placement (Joe Morales): Discussed the websites of the local
chapter and ASIS Nationalboth have areas for job seekers and job placers. Two new
placements were available from Time Magazine and Walmart. Interested members were asked to
see Joe.
Public Relations/Membership (Dennis Fitzgerald): No Report.
Golf Tournament: Terence McGrath reviewed the past Outing and
discussed the planning on next years event.
Program (Mike Burns): Mike discussed the evenings corporate
sponsor Purdue Pharmaceuticals and the host Rick Monroe. Rick will provide insight
and a tour of Purdus new corporate headquarters in Stamford. Decembers and
Januarys meetings will be at the Fairway Restaurant at Sterling Farms Golf Course in
Stamford.
Februarys meeting will again be sponsored by a Corporation. GE
Capital will sponsor the meeting. Steve Biley will be our host for the meeting.
Scholarship (John Gilligan): $3,000 has been set aside for
scholarships this year. The committee in finalizing their updated requirements. Chapter
members were encouraged to apply for themselves or their family members. 1 or 2
scholarships will be distributed.
Website (Rob Muessel): Website is updated frequently and
includes events information, meeting minutes, as well as links to the ASIS International
website and other pertinent sites. The site receives approximately 40 to 50
"hits" per month. Directions to Chapter meetings/events, as well as bad weather
cancellations can be obtained from the web site.
Chapter Anniversary (Lynda Williams & Chuck Kriewald): Chuck
Kriewald discussed the plans for the 40th anniversary to be held on Saturday
April 6, 2002 at the Fireside Inn in Newtown. The theme will be "Where were you in
1962".
Old Business: No old business to report.
New Business: Joe Morales, Chairman of the Nominating Committee
described the Chapter positions and then presented the Committees nominations: Mike
Moon for Chairman, Gary Pintek for 1st Vice Chairman, Terence McGrath for 2nd
Vice Chairman, Rob Muessel for Treasurer, and Steve Korf for Secretary. There were 2
nominations from the floorChuck Kriewald and Lynda Williamsbut both graciously
declined the nomination.
A vote was placed with the selection of the committees slate of
officers being accepted.
John Decker for the New York City Chapter discussed the CPP Review
course sponsored by the NYC Chapter to be held in February. The NYC chapter invites any
interested members from the CT Chapters to participate. The "unofficial" pass
rate from those who attend is 95%.

Guest Speaker: Rick Monroe, Security Manager for Purdue Pharma
discussed his role at Purdue and the develop of his position over the years. He also
discussed the changes that have occurred since September 11th. Rick thanked
many who he reached out for to share ideas.
Rick guided a tour for the attendees throughout Purdues new
corporate headquarters
Raffle: Paul Dodson won a $50 gift certificate to Chucks
in Danbury, donated by Boehringer Ingelheim.

Legislative (Chuck Kriewald): Training bill was defeated by the
legislature and sent back to committee for review and possible introduction next year. The
opposition was based on the training requirementssome legislators felt they would be
too difficult for senior citizens or young workers entering the possession. The bill asked
for 8 hours of training.
Placement (Joe Morales): No report.
Public Relations/Membership (Dennis Fitzgerald): Dennis
discussed the reluctance of local radio to assist with ASIS meeting/events announcements.
Dennis will be visiting local colleges to encourage criminal justice and related students
to join ASIS.
Dennis also discussed the upcoming Chapter Golf Tournament on June 18,
2001. Major sponsors are still being sought.
John Decker of the NYC Chapter informed the members of the NYC Trade
Show to be held at the Javitts Center on April 24, 2001.
Program (Mike Burns): Mike discussed the upcoming Chapter events
and meeting speakers. Septembers meeting will be held and sponsored by a
corporation. Additional information will follow.
Scholarship (John Gilligan): Yank Shugg has rejoined the Chapter
and will be assisting John in the Scholarship process.

New Business: 1 new member was in attendance and received her
ASIS certificate . Mike discussed the chapters 40th anniversary
next year and mentioned tentative plans to hold an anniversary party in the Spring of
2001. This party would be in place of the Snowflake Dinner/Dance.

Guest Speaker: Chairman Mike Burns introduced the ASIS
International President, Bonnie Michelman; and read an impressive biography of Ms.
Michelman.
Ms. Michelman spoke about her goals for the upcoming year: increase
membership and member participation, increase student members (Ms. Michelman is the 1st
ASIS "Student" member to hold the Presidents position), and to become a
more divers society (ASIS currently is only 6-7% female and 3-4% minority).
Ms. Michelman also discussed becoming a more global society-and
integrating with other organizations with similar interests. She finished her talk with an
open discussion in ways to revitalize local ASIS chapters. Suggestions were to hold joint
meetings with other local chapters, offer continuing educational programs and utilize all
of ASISs resources.
Chairman Mike Burns presented Ms. Michelman with a certificate of
appreciation from the Chapter.
Raffle: Wayne Wasilko and Hank Brentari each won a pair of
tickets to a Yankee game. Tickets were donated by Terence McGrath of Burns
International/Pinkerton.

Chairman Mike Burns discussed the meeting postponement and thanked the
members present for attending the rescheduled meeting. There were 2 new members in
attendance and one guest of Dale Seymour. Mike thanked all of the members for the support
of the Snowflake Dinner Dance and discussed plans for an anniversary event in the Spring
of 2002, as the Chapter will celebrates its 40th anniversary.

postponement, all Harbinger changes/additions must be to Lynda by 3/15 to ensure timely
distribution for the April meeting. The Golf Outing flyer will be inserted in the next
Harbinger mailing.
Education (Gary Pintek): No report.
Legislative (Chuck Kriewald): A follow-up on the pending
legislative bill for training and licensing. A discussion regarding the CALPI reluctance
to support the bill. Dale Seymour, a CALPI member, stated CALPIs concern is that the
standards for licensing private investigators are higher than those of police
officers in CT (misdemeanor convictions are a disqualifying condition under the
proposed law). CALPI is looking for consistency.
The bill has stalled mainly due to the reduction of licensing staff at
the State level to 1 person.
Public Relations/Membership (Dennis Fitzgerald): Dennis is
working on communications with radio and print media to advertise ASIS meetings and
events.
Dennis also discussed the plans for the upcoming Golf Outing on June
18, 2001. Dennis is the Chairman of the event and Mike Moon is the co-chair. The event
will be held at E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Course in Stamford. A full breakfast will be served
followed by a 8AM Shotgun start. A full sit down "filet mignon" dinner with open
refreshments will follow golf. The event will be limited to 132 golfers. The Chapter is
seeking a number of sponsors, including 2 or 3 maim sponsors. One company has already
committed to being a main sponsor. Cost will be $125 per person. A large portion of the
proceeds will be designated for scholarships.
Placement (Joe Morales): No report.
Program (Mike Burns): Bonnie Michelman will be the guest speaker
in April to discuss ASIS volunteering. Skip Brandt, ASIS Region VP will also speak.
Arrangements are being made for a "Corporate Sponsor" for the September meeting.
The intention is to have a corporate facility sponsor the meeting/dinner and provide a
tour and overview of their companies security program.
Scholarship (John Gilligan): No report.
Website (Rob Muessel): Rob Muessel has recently taken over as
webmaster. He will post all Chapter information and provide links to other websites
(placement, ASIS national, etc.) Rob has also taken on the additional task of creating new
nametags for the monthly meetings.
Snowflake Dance (Jon Scolpino): Mike Burns again thanked
everyone for attending and those who donated gifts. Treasurer Bob Sera stated the Chapter
took in nearly $1,000 over actual expenses.

New Business: Mike Moon and Dennis Fitzgerald attended the ASIS
regional meeting in February. Highlights of the meeting included more communication
amongst the Chapters and the Region, as well as formulating "business" plans for
each Chapter. Also, discussions on "updating" the ASIS name were held.

Guest Speaker: In lieu of a guest speaker, Chairman Mike Burns
and the entire attendance honored recent Past Chairman Dale Seymour. Dale was presented
with a plaque, Past Chairmans nametag and a gift certificate to a local restaurant.
Dale thanked the Chapter and reminisced on his years in the Chapter. Dale emphasized the
need to volunteer to assist the Chapter and discussed how his relationships in the Chapter
have helped him both personally and professionally.
Additional New Business: John Decker from the New York Chapter
discussed the excellent participation in the recent CPP Review course sponsored in New
York City. 80 ASIS members attended the course; 3 were from CT. John also mentioned the
annual New York City ASIS Trade Show and Seminar scheduled for April 24, 2001, at the
Javitts Center. The theme for the show and seminar is "Tomorrows Technology
Today."
Mike Burns also mentioned the CT Chapters annual Law Enforcement
Night is scheduled for Tuesday March 20, 2001. Guest Speaker will be new CT State Police
Commissioner Spada.
Raffle: Mike Burns won a $50 gift certificate to the Red Barn.

Chairman Mike Burns introduced John Decker from the NYC Chapter. John
is the Chairman of the Continuing Professional Education committee in NYC. John discussed
the commencement of the Tristate Chapter Program to share educational programs. The
NYC is hosting a CPP Review Program on February 23 and 24, 2001; at the NYAC. The cost is

Advertising and Newsletter (Lynda Williams): Chairman Mike Burns
for Lynda Williams. The deadline for Harbinger advertising changes is the Friday after the
monthly meeting. Members were encouraged to seek advertisers as the Harbinger is
distributed to over 300 members.
Education (Gary Pintek): No report.
Legislative (Chuck Kriewald): Chuck discussed the CT licensing
changes to be presented to the State Legislature. He mentioned CALPI may have some issues
with the misdemeanor section of the statutes as many times felonies are ple-bargained down
to misdemeanors.
Public Relations/Membership (Dennis Fitzgerald): Mike Burns for
Dennis. The chapter is contacting local newspapers to communicate the purpose of ASIS and
to "advertise" monthly meetings and events.
Placement (Joe Morales): Two new positions have been placed with
Joe and any member interested should contact him for further information. The positions
will also be placed on the chapter web site.
Program (Mike Burns): Any suggestions for quest speakers should
be directed to a Chapter Board member.
Scholarship (John Gilligan): No report.
Website (Rick Weiss): Links are being added for job placement. A
copy of the Harbinger and the Meeting Minutes will also be placed on the web site.
Snowflake Dance (Jon Scolpino): Mike Burns for Jon Scolpino. 126
guests attended the event and from all reports, an enjoyable evening was had by all. Mike
thanked those who attended and for the many outstanding door prizes donated. A full report
will be given at the March meeting.
Old Business: The Chapter is still trying to recognize past
Chairman Dale Seymour for his efforts. Dale has been travelling lately. Mike hopes to
accomplish this at the March meeting.
New Business: Mike Moon presented an overview of the Gold Outing
scheduled for June 18, 2001. The event will be held at E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Course in
Stamford. A full, sit down breakfast will be included. Followed by a shotgun start at 8AM
and a full course and open "refreshments" dinner following the golf. Various
level of sponsorships are being sought. Further information will be forthcoming.
Mike Burns passed around a committee sign-up sheet to the attendees
encouraging all to participate in the Chapter.

Break for Dinner: 6:45PM
Guest Speaker: Chairman Mike Burns introduced Ken Startz from
Risk Management Associates. Ken is a retired member of the CT State Police where he headed
up the multi-functional Special Services Unit. Ken gave an outstanding presentation on
Bomb Threat Procedures entitled "Please Leave Your Bombs Outside the Building".
Ken discussed how easy it is to gather information on bomb building citing a number
of bomb making periodicals. A proactive bomb procedure is paramount to a successful
incident resolution. Also, a "smart" facility design deters potential bombers.
Mike presented Ken with a certificate of appreciation from the Chapter.
Raffle: Steve Korf won a $50 gift certificate from the Red Barn.
Mike Hugyo won a home security system donated by Protection One.
Next Meeting: March 6, 2001. The Red Barn Restaurant in
Westport.
